“If you could take just one thing to a desert island, what would it be?”
That’s what was written on the blackboard.
—Ah, so this is a dream.
Have you ever had a dream where you realized you were dreaming?
That’s what this one was.
Desks and chairs lined up in a pitch-white space, and every single member of our Class 2-A was present.
There was no floor, ceiling, windows, doors, or walls, but there did seem to be a blackboard.
On that blackboard was written the phrase from earlier.
“What is this?” “Is this a classroom?” “Seriously, it’s way too white, man.” ”…It’s a dream, isn’t it?”
The reactions of my classmates varied, but they were weirdly realistic.
Every word and gesture was exactly the kind of phrase or body language that particular person would use.
It’s not uncommon for acquaintances in dreams to have different personalities or relationships, but this dream seemed focused on realism.
“So, what are you going to choose?”
The one who came up to my seat and asked that was Izama Chiwa, my childhood friend.
White hair falling to her shoulders, with gem-like blue eyes.
She was on the petite side, but her chest commanded a staggering presence.
There isn’t much variation in her facial expression, but deep down, the girl is surprisingly fond of a good joke.
We’ve been close since kindergarten, and even now that we’re in second year of high school, we still get along well.
My name is Izumo Sou-suke.
So, “Sousuke” it is, huh.
”…Even in a dream, your tits are damn big.”
Since it’s just a dream, I let loose and say things I’d normally hold back out of tact.
As if she were the real thing, she shot me a cold look that was clear as day despite her blank face.
“Pervert.”
“S-sorry about that.”
An apology slipped out before I could stop it.
This dream is way too real; it makes reacting to things difficult.
Maybe I should try to keep a normal demeanor, just like always.
“H-hmm, well. So, what was that about the blackboard?” “Yeah. What do you plan on taking with you?”
It’s a common enough topic. At least if you’ve lived for ten-odd years, it’s the kind of hypothetical scenario you’ll inevitably run into.
In the same vein, there’s stuff like “what would you do if you won first prize in the lottery,”
“what you’d want to be if you were reincarnated,”
or “which celebrity you’d want to date.”
I guess that covers most of it.
I made a point to check on my classmates just to be safe.
“A smartphone,” “That makes sense.”
“Maybe insect repellent?” “Oh, then I’ll take sunscreen~” “Hahaha, if we’re going that route, we need swimsuits too, right?”
“A plane. We’d board it to get back to Japan.” “You don’t know how to fly it, do you……!”
“Cola,” “I see what you mean. I’ll bring some potato chips, so we can share.”
“Fishing rods. Securing food is crucial.” “In that case, I’m bringing a harpoon gun. I want to catch something.”
And so on, my classmates spoke up with their own unique ideas.
I mean, it’s just small talk, so it wasn’t really my place to butt in, but given that we can only choose one thing, are they really okay with these choices?
Sure enough, there seemed to be some who were actually thinking things through properly…….
For instance――.
“A lighter.”
Starting a fire is harder than amateurs think, so having a lighter in the early stages of being stranded would be incredibly helpful. You could even use it to master fire-starting techniques before the fuel runs out.
Some also suggested similar items like “matches.”
“It’s got to be a gun.”
It would certainly be useful as a weapon, assuming we might have to fight people.
There are points of concern, too, like the user’s skill level, the type of firearm, and the caliber and quantity of ammunition.
For instance, if it were a revolver with only six rounds and no reloads, I wouldn’t exactly feel like selecting it as my single item.
You could certainly use the mere possession of such a weapon as a deterrent, but if you encountered beasts or anything else, you’d burn through those rounds instantly. Or rather, in that scenario, would you switch to a different weapon?
“A knife. It becomes an all-purpose item on a desert island.”
This is the classic choice. Some people have listed survival knives or machetes, but any of them would prove incredibly useful.
I’ve even heard stories about crafting blades from stone, though that’s definitely not something an amateur could easily pull off.
“A pot,” “Dishes,” “Fork. Great for eating, great for stabbing!”
I can relate to those sentiments, but it’s not a high priority for me. I’d prioritize survival first before worrying about living like a civilized person.
Hearing all the various opinions, I finally answered my childhood friend’s question.
“What I’m taking is…”
”…What are you taking?”
“—The crafting skill.”
”…Is that even an option?”
My childhood friend shot me a withering look.
