One of the new abilities granted by [Ability Awakening].
It allows you to intuitively sense where acquired materials can be obtained.
If it’s an apple, for instance, you’d know exactly where one is growing, even in places you hadn’t previously known about.
And the other added ability: Monster Material Release.
When a monster is slayed, it typically vanishes entirely, but at a stage prior to its disappearance, it can be converted into an item.
Applying these powers, I first obtained the root of the unique variant of the Treant.
By searching that location, I confirmed where the hiding target was situated.
“Everyone, this way.”
Micron swam through the sky following my orders, with High Low trailing right behind.
“Sousuke-kun, how do you know?”
Momo asked with a look of confusion.
“It must be due to an ‘ability awakening,’ right?”
It was Inukai who answered.
“Momo, did you ask Sousuke-kun?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I merely thought it would be rude to bother Kuno-kun with such an unnecessary question.”
“Do you not think it’s a bit rude to call Momo an idiot?”
Momo and Inui seem to be childhood friends. That was probably why they could talk to each other so casually.
“No, it’s fine, Inui. With my ability awakening, I was able to harvest monster materials, and I also gained the ability to sense where those harvested materials are located.”
Keeping the specific details of my abilities hidden might be useful in a pinch, but we had already decided to cooperate with them.
I figured it was for the best to reveal the extent of a power I would likely end up displaying frequently.
“Wow, monster materials! A classic staple of another-world stories, ehheh.”
I nodded in response to Insei’s comment.
Being a library committee member, she also indulged in light novels, so we could have conversations that geeked out over such topics.
“I know what you mean. Like weapons and armor made from monsters or something.”
“Weapons and armor? So does that mean it might be possible to craft a bow superior to the ones on Earth?”
Tsukihane leaned forward, asking with interest.
It was understandable she’d be curious, given her role as an archer.
“Yeah, once I figure out how to make them, I’ll teach you.”
“S-Sorry. I got a little carried away.”
“It’s no big deal. I figured someone like Tsurugi might be interested in swords made from monster materials, so I was thinking along those lines.”
“Aah, that’s definitely a fair point.”
Tohiba let out a faint, chuckling laugh.
“So you’re saying that whenever the opportunity arises, you seek out connections with beautiful girls? Have you gotten used to acting like a harem king?”
“Don’t say such strange things.”
Ichiba’s face was turning red.
“That’s right, Sōsuke-kun! If you’re going to talk to Yuno-chan, you should spend more time talking with Momo too!”
“Sousuke, if you’re gonna talk to Momoko, talk to me first. Same goes when bringing a new cat home; if you don’t shower the resident cats with plenty of love, it’s not gonna work out.”
“Is Momoko really settled in by now?”
“Mm-hmm. Seli-chan says the truth. Which means the one who deserves to be spoiled the most is the original cat who’s been here since age five—me, obviously.”
Ignoring Momo’s gloomy voice, Chi-ru spoke up.
“You know how in rom-coms, the childhood friend usually ends up unchosen at the end?” “Minus points for Momoko.” “Hah! What!”
“Say, aren’t there more and more stories lately where the childhood friend actually wins out?”
“Points back for Fumi-fumi.”
「Ah, thank you… stomp stomp」
It’s great to see the different parties interacting with each other.
I’ve been trying to talk to the silent Shinhou for a while now.
“Hey, Shinhou. It looks like I can craft a magic staff from the ‘Roots of the Needle Demon Tree,’ but what do you think?”
“A magic staff?”
“Yeah. The big kind an old grand mage would carry. Apparently, holding it boosts the power of attack spells by fifteen percent.”
“Th-that sounds amazing”
While chatting with everyone, I kept glancing at the crafting screen.
“Since it’s for attack spells, healing magic is out?”
Chiguo whispered in my ear.
“Looks like it. But what exactly is the definition of ‘magic,’ anyway?”
There are many obscure parts, such as whether there is any difference from “Abilities.”
Could it simply be due to the difference in the phrase I wished for in that first white dream?
Or is there a distinction based on the mysterious blackboard’s criteria?
“Hey, Sou-kun, do you know which members can equip this?”
“Aah, the usual thing you see in games, huh?”
As he wished it so, the screen shifted to display deformed icons of everyone on the island.
Above each icon were markings indicating a check or an X, clearly showing at a glance whether the equipment could be used or not.
“In the case of this staff, it seems only Fukhou, Professor Lumines, and Nagahata are eligible to equip it.”
“Nagahata is out, but I can’t use it?”
Yuri looked somewhat dissatisfied.
“It says ‘Attack Magic,’ but Ms. Nagahata didn’t seek plant magic as a means of attack, did she? It’s possible the mysterious blackboard side is judging compatibility independently from how we perceive it.”
Fukhou seemed to have arrived at a similar conclusion as me.
For instance, if there were another world where plant magic was classified as attack magic, and Nagahata’s current usage wasn’t the standard way of doing things there…
“That might be it. Anyway, I’ll hand this over to Fukhou for now.”
“Thank you. But, um, I’ll keep the staff Soosuke gave me first one safe and sound.”
“Ah, that makes me happy.”
Feeling a bit flustered, I placed the staff into Fukhou’s hands.
It was about as tall as Chiyu, so holding it while riding would be tough, but there was no choice but to endure it.
I can do things like this without even having to turn around anymore.
“S-so, is that the wand? Does it have a name?”
“Then it’s the ‘Staff of the Needle-Demon Tree.’”
“The ‘Staff of the Needle-Demon Tree’…”
“Right, Fukahō. Since we’re going for it, how about this?”
I generated an item and arranged it to fit Fukahō’s figure. “Kyaa! T-this is…”
A large, conical wizard’s hat and a black robe that looked suitably magical.
Since it goes over the uniform, will it look out of place…? No, there are plenty of magic academy stories in fiction, so I guess it should be fine.
“That one doesn’t have any equipment effects, but I thought you’d look like a wizard… Do you hate it?”
“N-no… Hehe, I’m happy. Thank you, Sōsuke.”
Fukahō’s voice was soft. She seemed pleased with the gift.
“Sou-kun, request the equipment for a White Mage.”
“Haha, making outfits tailored to everyone’s abilities might actually be fun,” I said.
“I’m serious about mine.”
“I know. But let’s put that off for later. —We’ve arrived.”
As expected, everyone seemed to have gotten used to life on this desert island by now.
The atmosphere tensed at a single word from me.
Big Tree.
How much time must pass before a tree grows to such a size?
Its imposing stature was such that I’d believe it if I heard the tree was thousands of years old.
Each individual leaf was sharp as a blade, and a single twig looked sharp enough to skewer a beast like a kebab.
Realizing at last that camouflage was impossible, the Man-Faced Tree remained seated in stillness, its face frozen in a sleeping expression.
“Alright, everyone, let’s start. Deep Method, I’m counting on you.”
“Right—『Explosion』!!”
A massive explosion erupted, and the 『Coniferous Treant』shrieked, shaking its branches and leaves wildly.
“It’d be so much easier if it just burned itself out.”
“Serichan, saying that sets up a plot device.”
Though it wasn’t Sekina’s fault at all, the situation did not end there.
The enemy sprayed water from every leaf it had and promptly extinguished the flames consuming itself.
“Of course, there were scorched sections and areas that had been blasted away, but compared to the whole, it was a trifling loss.”
“Mikuri, cast your repeating magic!”
Since it was working, in this desert island where mana was unlimited, simply firing it off consecutively was useful.
“Yes!”
We had just fought Behemoth the other day, but perhaps because of that experience, we were able to remain unshaken.
Despite the scene looking like something out of a fantasy world, we were acting with the intention of winning.
I did my small part by generating a ‘boulder’ and placing it above the enemy’s head.
