The following day, I was working at the SR Bunko office.
After finishing a call with an illustrator and hanging up, I felt someone poke me on the back. “Yo, Okaya-kun. You’re working hard.” “Uesaki-san.”
A gentle-looking male staff member wearing glasses stood there. His name was Sōji Uesaki.
He is the editor-in-chief and president of SR Bunko.
He is also the father of the divine author, Kamimatsu-sensei. He’s that kind of remarkable person.
Yet, unlike his previous company’s boss, he never puts on airs; he cherishes every single one of us employees. He’s a very good man.
“Working this hard even with the New Year’s rush approaching?”
“The New Year? Isn’t it still quite far off?”
“What are you talking about, Okaya-kun? It’ll be year-end in just two weeks.”
Uematsu-san points to the calendar. ……I guess you’re right. It’s mid-December now.
It’s almost New Year’s. ……Before that, next week is Christmas…… Christmas, huh.
What should we do about the holiday?…… “Okaya-kun?”
“Ah, sorry. Did you need something?”
“Oh, right. Can I get a stamp confirming receipt of the bonus check?”
Uematsu-san brings over the sign-off sheet. I press the seal to confirm receipt. “Here’s the statement.”
“Thank you. I’ll take it.”
……I see, so it’s already time for the year-end bonus.
This year there were so many unexpected incidents that I completely forgot about it.
How much do I think I’ll get?
At my previous job, since it was a major publishing house, I used to receive a pretty substantial amount.
In this new job, I wonder how much…… Wait, what the hell?! “What’s wrong, Okaya-kun?”

It was double what I’d been making back at Takanao.
"I-There's no way I can accept this!" I blurted out without thinking.
Even my pay at Takanao had been quite substantial. To earn a sum that exceeded that...
More than anything, I felt guilty. SR was a newly established company.
They couldn't possibly afford to pay so much to just one employee.
"What are you talking about? You've been working hard enough to deserve it." "No, that's not it at all..."
"Please, don't say that. Thanks to you, SR got a great start. Every single title has sold well. On top of that, alongside Mr. Hakuba, you created the masterpiece known as XX. You've contributed so much to this company this year."
SR started up this year, and thankfully, sales have been smooth sailing for every book.
I take pride in the fact that the XX we made with Oji is a masterpiece on par with that Kamimatsu-sensei's work, and the sales numbers back it up. I mean, I did do a lot of things...
But this amount is just too much to keep...
"I believe, you know, if you work hard, you should be rewarded for your efforts." "Uwatsuno-san..."
“Ogani-kun, Sakurai-kun—it’s thanks to the two of you working so, incredibly hard that SR has been able to grow this far. This is my way of thanking you for all that effort. Is it too little?”
...I felt like I was about to cry.
Back when we were at Takanaawa, giving your best was just expected. There was no recognition whatsoever for the effort put in; praise was a non-starter.
But it’s different here. Manager Uematsu had truly seen my hard work.
She gave me a reward for the effort I’d put in... and that made me happy, so I bowed again and again. “Thank you very much.”
“No need to thank me! It’s a reward for your hard work, a compensation you’re absolutely entitled to. If anything, I should be thanking you. Thanks to your dedication, we’ve been able to produce a lot of great books.”
It really hit me then: how good it had been to leave my previous workplace and follow this person.
